Dispelling myths this Pride Month

Foster Portsmouth will be marking Pride Month throughout June and Portsmouth Pride on Saturday 10 June by recognising the efforts of our foster carers from the LGBT+ community and their contribution to the care of vulnerable children and young people in the Portsmouth area, and looking to dispel some of the remaining myths around who can foster.

We’re also once again taking the opportunity to raise awareness of the national shortage of foster carers, and to tackle any remaining barriers that may prevent those from the LGBT+ community from exploring fostering as a route to building a family life.

Our foster families come in all forms, and Foster Portsmouth aim to grow our exceptional team of foster carers from the LGBT+ community to support diversity and secure the best placement matches for the children and young people in our care.

We know that there are still many people out there who are unsure about whether they can be a foster carer or not. The truth is, your relationship status and sexuality do not determine your ability to foster.

Anyone aged 21+ with a spare bedroom could foster with Foster Portsmouth regardless of their age, gender, sexuality, faith, ethnicity, marital or work status, or whether they rent or own their own home.

If you could make a positive difference to a child’s life and you’re interested in becoming a foster parent, we’d love to hear from you.

We welcome all enquiries about fostering whether this is for a short or long term arrangement for a child or siblings until they’re ready to live independently or be reunited with family, support for unaccompanied children seeking asylum or children with a disability, Supported Lodgings to develop young people’s independent living skills, a parent and baby placement, or respite care.

Foster carers receive excellent, local training and 24/7 support, including through our mentoring scheme and pioneering Mockingbird Programme support network, and competitive fees and allowances.

We need more foster carers from diverse backgrounds to reflect the children and young people in our city.

Could you make a difference to their life… and yours?
