Foster Care Fortnight Recruitment Event

Foster Portsmouth will be marking Foster Care Fortnight (13- 26 May) with its spring drop-in foster carer recruitment event on the morning of Saturday 18 May at The Holiday Inn Express – Portsmouth North at Farlington between 10am-1pm.

The event will fall during Foster Care Fortnight, the annual national campaign founded in 1997 by the UK’s leading fostering charity The Fostering Network. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the transformational power of fostering, celebrate the fostering community, support fostering services – including Foster Portsmouth – and showcase the commitment, passion and dedication of foster carers.

This year’s theme is ‘fostering moments’, providing an opportunity for us to also celebrate some of the special moments our foster carers create for the children in their care, their own families and for themselves.

Foster carer Zhoura shared: “I can’t express what kind of job this is. It is the best thing in the world… absolutely the best thing. It’s so rewarding. I absolutely love working with the young people.”

The drop-in event will enable people living in Portsmouth and the surrounding areas who wish to find out more about fostering to talk directly to existing foster carers and to hear first-hand about the rewards fostering can bring.

We will also once again be lighting up some of Portsmouth’s iconic buildings – The Guildhall and The Spinnaker Tower – in our brand colours and flying our Foster Portsmouth flag outside The Civic over Foster Care Fortnight  to raise awareness of the need for more foster carers to open their hearts and homes to the vulnerable children and young people from our city.

Young people such as 15-year-old Sasha* who is currently looking for a new foster family. Sasha likes going for walks and chatting over a cuppa in a café. She also likes K Pop music as well as art and crafts.

We need more foster carers from diverse backgrounds to reflect our looked after children and young people. If you are 21+ and have a spare bedroom, then you can foster with us regardless of your age, gender, faith, ethnicity, sexuality, marital or work status, or whether you rent or own your own home.

The council welcomes all enquiries about fostering. Portsmouth City Council’s foster carers come from all walks of life and they all share the same commitment and motivation to make a positive difference to a child’s life.

Children like 7-year-old Connor* and 4-year-old Jack*. Proud and confident Connor enjoys football, boxing, basketball, puzzles and likes testing adults on their maths skills which he is very good at himself. Jack enjoys playing computer games and riding his scooter along with his big brother.

Fostering could be a short or long term arrangement until they’re ready to live independently or be reunited with family, support for unaccompanied children seeking safety and asylum or children with a disabilitysupported lodgings to develop their independent living skills, a parent and baby placement, or respite care.

Foster carers receive excellent, local training and 24/7 support, including through our pioneering Mockingbird Programme support network and mentoring scheme, and competitive fees and allowances.

Join us to learn more about the positive impact you can make to the lives of Portsmouth’s vulnerable children and young people.

There’s no need to book, simply drop-in between 10am and 1pm.
