Building a family life through fostering

Foster Portsmouth marked Pride Month throughout June by recognising the efforts of our foster carers from the LGBT+ community and their contribution to the care of vulnerable children and young people in the Portsmouth area.

Our team also had a fantastic day at Portsmouth Pride on Saturday 6 July. Sporting our new backpack flags, other branded and Pride goodies, and armed with our rainbow fluffy bugs to giveaway, the team had a great time engaging with the crowds or those involved in the parade.

Both events enabled us to successfully raise awareness of the national shortage of foster carers, and to tackle the remaining myths that may prevent some people from the LGBT+ community from exploring fostering as a route to building a family life.

Foster Portsmouth celebrates the diversity of our dedicated team of foster carers and that our foster families come in all forms, and we’re proud to work with many individuals and couples from the LGBT+ community. Anyone aged 21+ with a spare bedroom could foster with Foster Portsmouth regardless of their age, gender, sexuality, faith, ethnicity, marital or work status, or whether they rent or own their own home.

Foster Portsmouth aim to grow our exceptional team of foster carers from the LGBT+ community to support diversity and secure the best placement matches for the children and young people in our care.

There are many types of fostering and everyone will be able to find one that’s the right fit for them. This could be a short or long-term arrangement for a child or siblings until they’re ready to live independently or be reunited with family, support for children with a disability or unaccompanied children seeking safety and asylumsupported lodgings to develop their independent living skills, a parent and baby placement, or respite care.

We offer our foster carers competitive, recently increased fees and allowances for the children in their care, a bespoke training programme and 24/7 support, access to the award-winning Mockingbird model of care, discounts and benefits, social activities, and free membership to The Fostering Network.

We need more foster carers from diverse backgrounds to reflect the children and young people in our city.

Could you make a difference to their life… and yours?
