A new support network for foster carers

We are in the process of implementing the Mockingbird Family Model of foster care in Portsmouth, with the aim to better support foster carers and young people in care. We are proud to be collaborating with The Fostering Network on this new project and launched our first Mockingbird constellation in January 2021. Additional hub carers and satellite carers are in the process of being recruited.

The Mockingbird Family Model has significant benefits to all involved and aims to normalise foster care. Based on the idea of an extended family, the model has the potential to improve placement stability, safety and permanency for children and young people, whilst also improving the support that is available for foster carers.

How it works

This innovative new model brings together up to ten ‘satellite foster families’ to form a ‘constellation’. At the heart of each ‘constellation’ is a ‘hub home’ where a specially recruited and trained foster carer supports all carers within the ‘constellation’ by offering support and advice, respite care, sleepovers and social activities.

This model has been shown to empower families to support each other and overcome problems before they escalate. It has also shown significant benefits to the lives of children and young people in care by normalising foster care, minimising placement disruption and building positive links with other families in the ‘constellation’.
