Unaccompanied refugee children seeking safety in Portsmouth

Campaigns, Types of Care,

Due to instability in their home countries, the number of unaccompanied refugee children travelling to the UK and seeking safety in the Portsmouth area continues to rise.

These children, who are often fleeing war, disaster and poverty, have travelled hundreds of miles, have been separated from family through no fault of their own, and often speak little or no English.

Caring for these children and young people arriving unaccompanied in the UK is highly rewarding; supporting their ambitions to learn English, engage in education and discover their carer’s own culture and way of life.

Rowshonara Reza, one of our dedicated foster carers who has cared for unaccompanied minors in Portsmouth remarked: “Some of these children may not have slept or eaten properly for months and even arrive without the basic necessities such as shoes. The difference you bring to a child’s life is so immense. We believe in what we’re doing; we laugh and make memories for them as well as for our own family.”

Foster Portsmouth need more foster carers who can help us meet the needs of these vulnerable children and young people arriving from around the world, often in the form of an emergency, short term placement or Supported Lodgings until they’re ready to live independently or be reunited with family.

Anyone aged 18+ with a spare bedroom could foster with us regardless of their age, gender, faith, ethnicity, sexuality, marital or work status, or whether they rent or own their own home. Our foster carers receive excellent, local training and 24/7 assistance, including through our mentoring scheme and the Mockingbird Programme, and competitive fees and allowances.
